Why AI assistants skip your products

Being listed in an AI channel and being recommended are different things. The gap is usually in your product data.

Ask an AI assistant for "waterproof hiking boots, wide fit, under $150" and you don't get ten blue links. You get three or four products, each with a reason. To build that short list, the assistant has to match each product to every part of the question. Under $150 is easy, because every catalog stores price. Waterproof and wide fit are where most products drop out.

The assistant doesn't guess. If the record doesn't say the boot is waterproof as a field — if it's buried in a description sentence like "great for wet conditions" — the assistant can't safely match it to the question. So it picks a product whose record does say it, even if yours is better.

The problem isn't discovery. It's data.

Most stores assume that being listed on a channel is the same as being found on it. It isn't. AI assistants don't rank by listing or by keyword density. They match product records to the shopper's question, attribute by attribute. If your record is missing an attribute the question asks about, your product doesn't match.

That gap shows up across categories. A camera bracket without compatible models stored as fields. A moisturizer without skin-type flags. A boot without a width field. Each one is invisible to the question it should answer.

What to do about it

  1. Find the shopper questions your catalog can't answer. Run the 10-minute AI visibility test, or let the free audit check every product at once.
  2. Add the missing details as structured fields, not just sentences. A compatibility field, not a compatibility sentence. A skin-type field, not a skin-type mention.
  3. Use the same value for the same thing across products. If the same camera is listed as "A7 IV", "A7M4" and "Alpha 7 IV" across your catalog, you have three products that each fit one model instead of one product that fits all three.
  4. Re-check as you add products and suppliers change feeds. New products and feed updates bring new gaps. This isn't a one-time fix.
